This recognisable ensign consists of thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red alternating with white. In the top left corner of the flag (canton) is a blue rectangle with 50 white 5 pointed stars. The 50 stars represent the 50 states of the USA, while the 13 stripes represent the 13 British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of great Britain.
