Close as I’ll get to the “perfect ruck”

I’ve spent more money and time than I should admit to in the search for the “perfect pack.” I cut my teeth on the old ALICE packs and have a lot of love for them, but they were never quite there. Newer packs are more comfortable and less pudgy around the middle, but lack compartmentalization. This ruck almost perfectly finds the right balance.

The material is densely woven, well stitched, and hard wearing, more durable than most packs I’ve used. The hardware won’t be impressive if you’re used to ITW Nexus, but it is from the 90s. They are first gen Fastex made in NZ and of good quality, and even include a (skinny) “broad arrow” mark in the molding. Waterproofing seems impeccable, though that can work both ways if you trip in a deep puddle. The tough construction and waterproofing is why it is noticeably heavier than my civilian rucks - I consider that tradeoff a win, but some will not.

The interior is separated into a top (main) and bottom (sleep system) compartment with some interior pockets and straps which are nice, but my favorite aspect is the bottom sleep system compartment can be zipped open from the inside if you do not want that separation, making it essentially one big unified compartment. The left side of the sleep system compartment also expands outward if you want to keep your sleeping mat/каремат stowed inside.

Like the ALICE packs I loved, it has sizable outside pockeys so you can actually access some of your gear without emptying half the main…

Thanks so much for the fantastic review, Jason!

We're really stoked to hear you've found a pack that hits that sweet spot you've been searching for. It's awesome that the Australian Army DPCU Rucksack manages to balance the compartmentalization and durability you loved about the old ALICE packs with the comfort of more modern designs.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown on the construction and hardware too - we really appreciate you sharing that insight about the densely woven material, stitching, and those first gen NZ-made Fastex buckles. And it's brilliant that the waterproofing and overall durability are working out so well for you, even if it does add a bit of weight to the pack.

We love that you're getting so much use out of the compartment flexibility and all that ALICE-style webbing. The fact that you can access those outside pockets without unpacking everything, and that the sleep system compartment can be opened up from the inside for a unified space, sounds like exactly the kind of thoughtful design you were after. And cheers for the kind words about how it all came together - it's great hearing how the pack is serving you well.

Thanks heaps for taking the time to leave such a detailed and enthusiastic review. We hope the rucksack serves you well on all your adventures and border crossings to come. Cheers!
