Portugal adopted their flag in 1911 after deposing the constitutional monarchy. It is claimed that the green stands for the hope of the Portuguese people and the red is for the blood of those who died serving the nation. The flag an armillary sphere and national shield in the centre of the split of colours.

The flag has a white strip on the side with two metal eyelets.
